Male & Female Pattern Baldness
What kind of hair loss are you experiencing?
Hair loss can happen from so many different underling causes: age, stress, nutrition, medications, illness, and hormone imbalances to name a few. The pattern in which your hair loss presents itself, is indicative of the type of hair loss you’re experiencing and what might be beneficial from a positive intervention. For example, hair loss at the temples, which I have, is NOT a sign of female pattern baldness (FPB), while widening at the part line IS a sign of FPB.
For this edition let’s break down Male (MPB) and Female Pattern Baldness (FPB), also known as androgenetic alopecia.
This type of hair loss tends to follow a consistent pattern that progresses over time, it’s not a rapid onset. Rapid onset is typically a sign of one of the other causes of diffuse (all over) hair loss. Always talk to a medical professional when you see a change in your hair.
The pattern is different for men and women. You can see in this image, as we move to the right, Earlier intervention is key. I have found that for men, we’re more likely to see regrowth in the circle at the back of the head versus at their receding hairline.
Male and Female Pattern Baldness follows different patterns of hair loss than diffuse hair loss which is all over or at places like the temples
Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) Characteristics:
Receding Hairline: Begins at the temples and progresses to the back of the head.
Thinning Crown: The hair at the crown (top of the head) also begins to thin.
M-shaped Pattern: The receding hairline and thinning crown eventually meet, forming an M-shaped pattern.
Advanced Stages: Hair loss continues until only a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair remains around the sides and back of the head.
Female Pattern Baldness (FPB) Characteristics:
Diffuse Thinning: Hair thins mainly on the top and crown of the scalp.
Widening Part: The central part of the hair widens, often described as a Christmas tree pattern.
Retained Hairline: Unlike men, women usually maintain their frontal hairline.
Overall Thinning: Hair loss is less noticeable than in men but affects the entire scalp.
What causes this?
Increased sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone that shrinks hair follicles.
For women polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) causes excess androgenic hormones that can
It used to be assumed that this was genetic hair loss, but researching is starting to negate this.
90% of people with male and female pattern baldness have inflammation of the hair follicle.

And I’ll leave you with this one IMPORTANT reminder! Hair growth takes time. Typically, experts say that when you take positive intervention, it takes at least 6 months for the results to begin to manifest themselves. That’s the importance of taking photos, so we can track the progress over time and celebrate the baby steps. Don’t give up right before the magic happens.
Here’s to thick, healthy, hair growth.
